If I can understand your silence,
the moments when you pull a shroud around you,
talking when asked to,
expressing reluctantly in syllables
and often times selectively ignoring to respond

on footsteps
too quiet
to follow
summer steps
into fall
into our day
on feelings
on tears
too hard
to swallow
we treasure
the pain
we feel
when the heart
leads the way
anymore
if I gave
my heart
to you
would you
take it
and hold
it close
to yours
if not
could you
place it
dusty and
forgotten
on a shelf
because
I really
wouldn’t
want it
anymore
