Broken Hearts

“But I will tell you this, my love.
I would break my own heart for you.”

Maybe you will understand how much I need you if I let you go. Not for my sake, but for yours. Maybe you will see how much I burden you with my demons. My darkness. And maybe, at first, you’ll think I’m just trying to pull away. Or maybe, you’ll let go of my hand and let me go without hesitation.

I’m not sure which would hurt me the most. But I will tell you this. If it would make you happier, I would willingly break my own heart. I would do that for you. I would let you go, if only to give you a chance to be free. Free from my dark. Free from my broken soul. Free from me.

Rogue Comets

“And that. The passion we shared.
Oh, how much I miss it.”

We crashed together in the night like a pair of rogue comets. There were flashes. Explosions. And we both disintegrated into bits of rubble and stardust. And that. The passion we once shared. I don’t think I can emphasize how much I miss it. Being with you. Without a care in the world. Where nothing else mattered but you and me and the sounds we could elicit from one another. The way we would pour all the intensity into each other and leave nothing behind.

So, my love, I can’t tell you how sorry I am that I’ve lost that part of me. Maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll find it again one day. Hopefully, you’ll still be with me when it happens.

Night Owl Poetry - Dorinda Duclos

With her own heart, she gave love

Guiding and nurturing me down the path

Of life, a life I could not have lived, without her

Her gentle touch, comforting words, always

Music to my ears, a concert of positive

Notes left in my lunchbox, her reminder

She was always with me, always had me,

In her arms, even in her weakest moments

She was stronger than anyone I knew, and

Now that she has made the journey to Heaven

I know I will still have that guiding light,

For in my eyes, she will always be a star.

2020 Daily Writing Challenge

Today is Day 181 of the 2020 Daily Writing Challenge.

Did you write yesterday?  We get knocked down sometimes. Current events have done an excellent job of destroying normal. There is a silver lining. These times have granted us an opportunity to reexamine life, priorities, and what happiness really means.  I am determined, and I refuse to stay stuck in a mess. Today, I stand up, regroup, reset my intentions, and recommit to attaining my dreams.

An ongoing topic of exploration is Cal Newport’s concept of deep work, “the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task.” Newport advocates approaching and completing challenging tasks by eliminating distractions, committing to block scheduling, and adhering to your intentions.

I have a secret. It’s embarrassing when I am caught, and I discover someone is listening. Talking to myself, in my head, and aloud is a normal occurrence. I assure you, my conversations are rather mundane. Where is my phone? Did I pay the bill? Should I buy lemons at the grocery store? Who is knocking on my front door? Why did I come into this room? Those are typical topics I explore almost daily. 

Late at night when the house is finally silent, the questions fade, and everything grows quiet. The voice changes, and I know my evening adventure is about to begin. I have heard this voice since I was a child. It has told me calming bedtime stories, created imaginary characters, and handed me the key to fantastical worlds. It is my trusted companion. Color psychology is a field of study that’s devoted to analyzing the emotional and behavioral effects produced by colors and color combinations. Ecommerce website owners want to know which color will make their website visitors spend more money. Home decorators are after a color that will transform a bedroom into a tranquil Zen retreat. Fast-food restaurant owners are dying to know which color combinations will make you want to super-size your meal. As you can imagine, color psychology is big business.

Describing the emotional connections that people can have with colors can be a very hippy-esque topic and that is why it is handy to have an understanding of the emotional attributes of some of the main color groups.

  • Red – Anger, danger, warmth and passion. It can increase heart rate and raise blood pressure, and be overwhelming if used too much.
