Keeping it real – Finding the courage to embrace our “self”

Rhapsody Bohème

This pictures speaks a 1000 words to me and let’s face it, it’s not always easy being ourselves, is it? Or should I say to be accepted as ourselves! Daily, there are so many influences that constantly challenge us to fit in with the majority, to follow mass beliefs and to conform to what is acceptable and honored by society and mankind. Daily, we dig deep to muster the courage to be ourselves, to continue swimming against the grain and to be our true, authentic self.

Today I want to hear from you and I solicit your feedback of what that looks like for you in your daily practice. How do you stay true to yourself? What practices have worked for you and what advice would you give someone along their own journey?

Fall, how it feels

Keep it alive

Gradually the sunlight takes on a sweeter hue

The golden rays of the sun bending and slanting more

Bit by bit the days shorten and the nights lengthen

From sizzling hot the temperatures fall and the air cools down

The trees around me are changing their colors

From brilliant green they turn golden, brown, rust and orange

Now the mornings are a bit foggy and chilly

And the nights are made warm and cozy by log fires

Lighting lamps

paeansunpluggedblog

Earthen lamps, candles, lanterns
and strings of tiny lights
all awaiting to be lit
trying to illuminate the hazy skyline.

Gaily wrapped gifts, boxes of dry fruits
and the ubiquitous mithai*
to be exchanged and shared with close ones
the leftovers to be distributed as a sign of largesse.

Petals, rice flour, limestone powder
to make beautiful patterns on home entrances
welcoming the deities and the guests
one designated day to do so.

A festival of lights, of celebrations
defeating darkness with light
evil overcome with  goodness
the darkness within may still remain.

Written for dVerse. Today’s host Ingrid says: For this challenge, I want you to write a poem using only concrete nouns, subject matter and imagery. For the purposes of this exercise, the following words are banned: soul, love, lust, dreams, sorrow, suffering, heartache, wonder, etc.
