“Inner Strength” by Sharon Cummings
I never feared men
a machismo thing born on
unkind city streets
but age and infirmity
shrivels all vanity

comes a time in a marriage
when a lucky few realize
their spouse knows them
better than anyone ever
could know them from inside
and outside and underneath
flesh and blood costumes
behind even purpose-built
images flattered by mirrors
the world holds in hand
knows them full in their
glory and gristle and bone
and in knowing them nonetheless
loves them beyond any love
they could ever in honesty
manage to feel for themselves
comes a time in a marriage
when that lucky few find
an exquisite contentment

“The Two Travellers” by Jack B. Yeats
piece me
together
with rainbows
and ritual
sweeten my wine
with your tongue
take my essence
and make of it
what you will
for I no longer
need myself
now that you
fixed what
was broken
my husk can
contain and
protect you
we two
a new we
a new whole

will I still be here
when the geese return north
cold a mere memory

“Between Existences” by Kathryn Brimblecombe-Fox
mindless droning
repetitive tasks
keep us busy
without being busy
enough conscious
to sleep open-eyed
on the ragged thin
edge of existence
where love and hate
cut themselves
just to remind us
how good they
could feel if
we just put some
skin in the game
