North Star

Sarah Doughty

“You were my personal North star,
and in an instant, you were gone.”

It was in the longing that I noticed just how lonely the stars were as they twinkled in the night sky. How so many years had passed until the light finally reached my eyes. That’s what it felt like when I saw your eyes for the first time. Like, at last, they were seen for what they were. Beautiful. Brilliant. And uniquely you. But when you left this world behind I could feel the loss of them. It felt as though I had waited for what seemed like a lifetime to glimpse those perfect eyes, only to never see them again. It was like you were my personal North star, and in an instant, you were gone as if you never existed at all.

But I will
always remember
those eyes.
