“It’s just the deep darkness.
You. Me. And the little
glimpses of the moon.”
On this night, the moonlight flickers in and out of existence behind a curtain of clouds. The illumination is just enough that I can make out my immediate surroundings, but the rest of the world seems to have fallen away. Though I cannot see you, I know you’re there. Just beyond my outstretched fingers. I take a few tentative steps, letting the grass tickle my toes as I walk. It feels damp, like the early morning dew that develops just before dawn. Yet there’s no sign of day. No pink lingers in the sky. It’s just the deep darkness. Those cotton candy clouds. You. Me. And the little glimpses of the moon.

I’d forgotten what peace felt like.
