For The Soldiers

poppy red

I wear the poppy
with heartfelt sorrow
for the soldiers buried
with their bravery
beneath white crosses
in Flanders Field
and for the soldiers
returned who lived
to walk the earth
their bravery
buried by memories
that haunt
in the dark of sleep
reliving fear they
dare not speak
while tears burn
their cheeks
a poppy red
the blush of which
holds no shame
for if asked
once more
they’d do it again.
