It’s hard on a man when he realizes
that he’s not as young as he used to be.
When so many things that he used to do
have become more difficult.
When a 40 pound bag of dog food
seems twice as heavy now.
When his back tells him, “No more today”
and the pain won’t go away.
When his list of medications
has words he can’t pronounce.
He starts to wonder what he’ll do
When he is on the edge of never
and he can do no more.
But he is not a quitter
And he’ll keep going through the pain.
He won’t admit that he’s not the man he used to be
although he knows it’s true.
So he will keep on going
until his life is through.
