V.J.’s challenge this week is to write about “Things My Father Said”
My father’s words: “You don’t know how good you’ve got it”
Dad, you were right
I didn’t know,
as most kids don’t.
I resented boundaries
as if they were there
to make my life miserable…
I rolled my eyes often
at the moments of embarrassment
when you made your funny jokes…
I didn’t appreciate the everyday
things you did for me…
You built a life to keep me safe,
insure my basic needs,
and give me advantages, you never had.
I told myself, what did you know…
well, now I know…you were right,
I just didn’t know how good I had it.
