Don’t Look Away

Sarah Doughty

“Don’t look away, darling.
My brokenness is reflected in your eyes.”

Can you feel it too? How we share a similar haunted past? What it means to feel like there’s nothing left of you but a husk — a memory in a living body? Who we were then, and what we’ve become now? When we felt whole and happy, and the moment it all changed — when the world turned into the dark place we know so well today?

So please, darling. Don’t look away. We feel alone, but at the same time, we are in this together. You don’t have to feel so lost. Because I’m here.

I’m always here. In the dark. With you.

If my dreams have powers,
I would dream of a majestic house;
a house with a luxurious living room…
a grandiose staircase…
a magnificent dining area…
an elegant chandelier….
a towering balcony….

But my dreams don’t have powers,
So, i didn’t get a majestic house;
but a wonderful home,
With joyful kids welcoming in our living room….
with cheerful girls running back and forth our stairs…
with visitors admiringly looking at our chandelier…
With friends enjoying the afternoon view in our balcony…

If my dreams have powers,
I would dream of a perfect world;
where true friends are by your side in moments of sadness…
where neighbors are stronger and wiser….
where love is an act of surrendering to another person…

But my dreams don’t have powers,
So I have friends who are by my side in happy times,
because their joy is…

The Answers

woman-2003647_1280

By Ali Grimshaw

They call me adult.
I have learned to apologize, drive a car
mastered spell check to avoid embarrassment.
Yet my days of fevered creation
and re-imagining myself, remain inadequate.
Knowing I know less with each ring of curiosity around my trunk.
Like paint peeling off an old house I am more than one color.
I live as a revolving door to exit and enter,
each time with a different view.
Growing up I believed adults lived in sureness.
Shocked disappointment crashed down
when the truth broke through
with no answers in its hands for me.
Why didn’t mom tell me?

Somewhere Inside

Walt's Writings

Somewhere inside
There is hidden
The dark of you
Another side of you
Another voice
Filled with
The power of darkness
Embrace it
Let it guide your pen
As it forms
The words you need
Don’t be alarmed
Just let the words go
They may be your worst
But they could be your best
But you’ll never know
Until you let them flow
