They say four letter words
are the ones we should avoid
the naughty and nasty ones
that hurt and harm others
But there are other words
even smaller
that can cause
as much pain
and poison
a relationship
Three letters
that can tie you down
and keep you from doing
what you know you should do
but won’t
Your heart longs to say
“I love you”
“I miss you”
“I am sorry”
But your mind
won’t let your heart
speak and smothers
it with EGO
And a love that blossomed
for a moment
dies
and the heart is left
with a bouquet of dead dreams
that could have come true
but for the power of
a three letter word
EGO

Thank you for this beautiful and wise poem. How true it rings all through.
I couldn’t agree more about the dangers of Ego and how destructive it can be.
” And love that blossomed
for a moment
dies ”
So sensitive.

OMG I love this. I rarely think of EGO but what you say nailed it. The line “bouquet of dead dreams” just screams to me. Damn good my friend.

Oh, B! You make me so happy that this hit you on target! I would hate to think I’m soaking up the joy of your work without offering something in return! You know, a “Fair Exchange”! Ha! I love that you read what I write and what is left hidden or unsaid too! So cool! Yes, you caught the best line to be sure. I loved it too! Not sure how I came up with that! Ha!
