I knew her voice
like the sound of my breath
so smart
opening her mouth to speak
and leaving me unsteady
Asking her why they broke up
she called him sexless
something about his eyes, and
how he sipped coffee
through a straw
Once we got close
in a rental
between Chicago and Des Moines
miles of corn and wheat
as far as our eyes could see
her eyes like the sky
She leaned on me while I drove
blond corn silk on my shoulder
