The Ricochet

Here again is our Dear Friend Tanya Cliff with her wonderful and thoughtful piece “Ricochet”. Here is a coming of age piece with a very subtle and heartfelt twist at the end. See if You can guess it? Tanya has cleverly used her title in a final merger with her ending. Bravo Tanya! Please read and enjoy! Come visit Tanya!

“I got it”
yelled the boy
as feathers went flying
the body hit the ground with a soft thud

it was his first kill
harvested
with this year’s birthday present
in his grandma’s backyard

a pellet gun
aimed carefully

“lads will be lads”
said the dad
fantasizing
his strapping young hunter
field dressing
a 12-point buck

“it’s just a bird”
said the mom
consoling
her son as a few of his tears
splashed
on the winged carcass

“what a shame”
said the granny
sighing
a few days later
upon discovering a nest
filled
with
dead
baby
birds

HOW LONG WILL YOU LET ME – BURN?

By Charles Robert Lindholm

How long will you let me – Burn?
in the fire you started
with your look
with your kiss
with your touch

When will you come
and Quench
the fire in my temple?

When will you let your
love flow all over me
and give me the relief
and the release from
the aching and pain
of the fire in my heart
and the fire in my soul
that you let – burn?

When will you quench
the fire you set in me?

When will you be
will you ever be

Mine?
